American Elegance: Post-War Fashion” A lecture by Petra Slinkard

Join us Sunday, February 11th as we welcome Petra Slinkard, former Curator of Costumes at the Chicago History Museum and current Curator of Fashion and Textiles at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, to our showroom, for a lecture and Open House.

Our doors open at 3 pm for you to peruse our collection of luxury lingerie and nightwear. Rare spirits line Mesh & Bone will also be in attendance, providing cocktails created from their collection of artisan liquors.

At 4 pm, Petra will lecture on “American Elegance: Post-War Fashion”.

Next you will experience an olfactory gallery of rare and selected essences, culminating in the creation of your design, using natural botanicals and hand-distilled perfumer’s alcohol to stabilize and preserve your fragrance. Whether you are dreaming of a leathery oriental, a fresh floral, an elegant, earthy incense, or a modern citrus, this will be an experience to indulge yourself or give as a gift: perfect for Mother’s Day.

Join us as we continue our series on the Fundamentals of Fragrance with a workshop on Noir Tropicals, with a hands on-experience in perfumery, inspired by the dark tropical prints of our collection of lingerie and nightwear, designed by tattoo artist Esther Garcia of Butterfat studios.

The experience will begin with libations, as fragrance expert Tanja Buhler presents the fundamentals of fragarance. Next you will be guided you through an olfactory gallery of rare and selected tropical essences, culminating in the creation of your own signature scent. Each guest will also receive a silk eye mask from Department of Curiosities, which will be used to heighten the olfactory experience.

We invite you to a celebration of the sensual with Miss Tosh, the Starlet of Burlesque, at the magnificent Velaslavasay Panorama, an exhibition hall, theatre, and garden dedicated to the production and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those of the 360-degree variety.

The day begins with a trunk show, wherein your intrepid couturières, Gerry Quinton & Jamie Hayes, will be on-hand to fit you in our exquisite wares, while Miss Tosh will be circulating on the Panorama grounds to demonstrate to the finer points of the art of Burlesque.
In the evening, Miss Tosh will perform two of her renowned Burlesque acts on the Panorama stage, followed by a reception in the tea garden, with more time to peruse the Department of Curiosities collection.

Such exciting times at Department of Curiosities! We are finishing up production of our first round of preview orders and gearing up for more events centered around curiosity and beauty. We are humbled and grateful for the support we’ve received from our Chicago community. Preview sales have been instrumental in launching this venture. To that end, we would like to cordially invite you to one final “Preview” event. Please join us this Saturday, July 30, from 2 – 6 pm at our storefront/workshop at 3013 W. Armitage. This event will be the last time we offer our special preview pricing. As always, we’ll have some French rosé and perhaps a cooling punch to take the edge off of the summer heat as you peruse our luscious silks.

Wit Pop Up: 
One of our in-house lines, Production Mode, will be setting up shop at theWit Hotel during the month of August. TheWit Hotel is located at 201 N. State St. in Chicago’s downtown Loop. Boutique hours are W-F 2 – 7 pm and Saturdays 12 – 7 pm.

Corsetry Class: 
Designer Gerry Quinton of our in-house corsetry brand, Morua, will be offering a three day workshop for intermediate and advanced stitchers entitled “Corset making for Beginners”. The class will be held here at Department of Curiosities on August 12 – 14. This course runs only once per year and only two spots are left. Email gerry@​moruadesigns.​com to secure your place. Fashion Show: 
We end August with our first Fashion Show, at ROOF, the beautiful atrium space atop theWit Hotel. Sip a cocktail and enjoy the work of Production Mode and Department of Curiosities against the backdrop of Chicago’s grand skyline. Save the date: the show will be on Thursday, August 25th at 7 pm. Space is limited so we recommend arriving early.
